In April, our team at AKI Design ventured to Milan for the prestigious Salone del Mobile, the epicentre of cutting-edge interior design. Here, we uncovered the emerging trends for 2024, each set to transform the way we experience and design our living environments. Our visit not only inspired us but also gave us insights into how these trends can be integrated into your homes, ensuring longevity and timeless appeal.

Colour Trends
- Electric Blue: This vibrant hue is making a bold entrance. Think electric blue carpets and statement furniture pieces to add a pop of energy and style.
- Chocolate Brown: A return to earthy, comforting tones, chocolate brown is ideal for creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. It works beautifully as curtain fabric, wall paint (we love the lime wash finishes from Bauwerk), furniture, and soft furnishings.
- Monochrome: Single-colour schemes are gaining traction. Envision entire rooms, including matching rugs and accessories, in one harmonious shade for a chic, cohesive look.
- Green: From furniture to rugs and walls, green in various shades is set to bring a touch of nature indoors.
- Ombre: Subtle yet striking, ombre is a trend to watch, especially in tables, furniture accents, and lighting.
Material Revolution
- Resin: This versatile material is perfect for unique objects, side tables, and even statement dining tables.
- Marble: Marble is being reinvented with layers and colours, adding depth and a modern twist to this classic material.
- Steel (Metal): Look out for steel in tables, side tables, and decorative objects. MDF Italia is leading the way with innovative designs.
- Lacquer: For a sleek finish, lacquer is the go-to for consoles, cabinetry, and tables, offering a refined and elegant touch.
Furniture Trends
- The A.B.C. Chair: Designed in 1999 by Maria Vittoria Backhaus, this piece remains a classic, embodying timeless design.
- Green with a Twist: A rich green with blue nuances was ubiquitous at the fair, including the Mateo table by Vincent Van Duysen for Molteni&C.
- Patricia Urquiola’s Influence: Her Hayama buffet for Cassina has inspired an entire collection, merging classic style with modern flair.
- The Serpentine Sofa: From Dante Goods and Bads, this sofa is a testament to contemporary design aesthetics.
- Acerbis – Free System Sofa: This collection redefines flexibility in furniture design, offering custom solutions for modern living.
Design and Style Trends
- Layers: We’re seeing layers in everything from furniture to marble and lighting, adding complexity and richness to designs.
- Tubular Structures: Sofas and other furniture pieces are embracing tubular shapes, adding a retro yet modern vibe.
- 90s Italian Minimalism: A resurgence of 90s Italian minimalism in furniture design is on the horizon, celebrating simplicity and elegance.
- Organic Knotting: Loewe chairs and similar designs are showcasing organic shapes through knotting, weaving, and braiding, bringing texture and a natural feel.
Destination Designers
Collaborations with larger companies are a highlight. Keep an eye on Vincenzo for Henry Timi, Vincent Van Duysen for Molteni&C, and Patricia Urquiola for Cassina. Sabine Marcelis is another designer making waves with her innovative approaches.
As we look ahead to 2024, it’s clear that these trends from Milan will significantly influence our interior spaces. At AKI Design, we’re excited to incorporate these elements into our projects, combining our signature style with these fresh inspirations.
